FAQ
Do I need DOB credentials too, or just FDNY?
FDNY F-89 is the core requirement. DOB credentials (SSM or SSC) open you up to broader assignments and the dual-credential pay band. We won't pass over a strong F-89 candidate for not having a DOB license, but we do pay more for both.
Are these night shift roles?
Some are. Hot-work-heavy projects and high-rise sites often have early-morning, night, and weekend windows. Shift premium applies. When you apply, tell us your shift availability and we'll match assignments accordingly.
What's the difference between operating-building FSM work and new-construction FSM work?
New construction (the F-89 role) involves supervising active construction fire safety: standpipe operability, egress during active work, hot-work permitting, and FDNY coordination during inspections. Operating-building fire safety (typically under a different COF framework, closer to F-01 territory) involves the building's life-safety systems post-occupancy. SSM focuses on the construction-phase role, which is the F-89 scope.
How does the FDNY F-89 license renewal work?
The F-89 Certificate of Fitness is issued by FDNY and renews on a 3-year cycle. Renewal requires completing a FDNY-approved continuing education course before expiration. SSM covers the cost of renewal for staff on active assignments.
Can I hold F-89 alongside a DOB SSM license on the same project?
In many cases, yes. DOB and FDNY have different scopes (DOB SSM covers the building code safety plan; F-89 covers the fire safety log and hot-work). On projects that require both, holding both credentials in one person can simplify site operations and opens you to dual-credential pay at SSM.
How does scheduling work for FSM assignments on long-term projects?
Most FSM assignments run Monday through Friday daytime, with evening and weekend windows as the project's hot-work and MEP schedule requires. We confirm your shift window before the assignment starts and adjust as the project phases change. We don't spring new shift requirements on people without notice.
